So, what are the ideas for the board? I think a supernatural/mythological theme would be nice. We could have the following creatures (Or certain creatures from this list) - Elves
- Fairies
- Vampires
- Werewolves (Werebears, Werepanthers, etc)
- Ghosts
- Shape-shifters
- Witches
- Humans
- Orcs
- Centaurs
- Demons
- Angels]
- Pixies
- Leprechauns
- Giants
- Dwarves
- Nymphs
- Warlocks
- Wizards
There are several other creatures we COULD involve, just have to list more of them. We could stick to the more Mythological standpoint or the more Supernatural standpoint or combine the two... What do you think?

I think there is a way we could utilize all of them. That is if we make the world large enough/complex enough but we should start out with a select few first. How about Vampires, Werewolves, Witches and Humans? That gives us something to build up from.

And then the others are "Discovered"? I think something that might make it interesting is have there be a school or something for the "Supernatural" beings and maybe a school for the "Mythological" beings as an idea? There could be gifted humans who can "sense" both sides, while most humans are ignorant, unless one of the creatures mess up. That's another route we could take.

Great idea. This is where we can get inspiration from House of Night and Charmed. If we have a school for Supernatural beings it would give a base for the setting, and I too like the idea of having humans who can sense "both sides" or have some sort of simple abilities (telepathy, empathy, clairaudience etc).

I think that ALL creatures would have one base ability, aside from a general "race" ability and posting will allow them to "evolve" from that. I think that SOME humans could have simple abilities, which is what I was alluding to, but obviously not all humans.
So could this be based mainly in the school but have places "outside" the school (Which could be hidden like in Charmed) that the beings can walk around in (House of Night, people know about Vampires and know they exist (mostly) and so the school is known, but they still put make-up on to cover up their markings and go out in public looking completely normal). There could be a focus on breaking the barriers between species/races, the school could focus on teaching them to blend into society and instead of the school being the only thing hidden, it could be a "City" or "Town" that is hidden where supernatural creatures are moved to.
There could be a sort of "Supernatural Creature Police" to make sure their existence remains a secret, and other groups who are "liberals" who want to make their presence known... Kind of can tie in politics with it if needed.

Great ideas! Love them. Perhaps there could be a way we could include our wolf universe into this world as well that way we aren't completely giving up on Aelyn in a way. They could be apart of the mythological world, so think of this as stretching our lens to encompass the entire world instead of just one part of it if that makes sense. The school definitely should be hidden from humanity, maybe there could be like a hidden city where mythological creatures dwell, or an island perhaps?

I think that sounds fun. I'm going to move this to the "General" Board so we can get more than just Staff Input and have member input as well, giving everyone a part in its creation!

You could involve the wolves by making them into shape shifters. Reasoning behind that could be that when they left their world the magics of this one changed them.
Off topic, did y'all miss me? xD

Yes we did, and I think that making our wolves shape-shifters (if we choose to) would make a lot of sense with the way the Aelyn Universe is set up in my mind.

I also think its a good idea to start with a small base of beings and then expand into more as more people actually get into it. I also think the whole Academy thing is a good idea. Been watching alot of Soul Eater recently Lol

I think it might be a good idea to start small too... then we can make it a bonus to members or something new to spark creativity if needed in the future.
One question, which creatures should we start out with? Shape-shifters of course if members want to bring their wolves over... Other ideas for sure? I think Humans are a given, perhaps witches...

Better question is how many the Humans actually would know about in the start. Quite of few of the mythological beings could be in hiding within them, or are we going to make them seperate? We'd have to have a limit as to how much power witches and the like would have. We'd have to figure these things out before we can decide what all to have at the beginning.
Plus It'd be a good way to advance the story by the discovery of more races and being and whatnot, either by them being found or by them revealing themselves.

The initial idea was that there were a few "Gifted" humans that could sense creatures or have special abilities (Like Celestic mentioned). Did we want everyone to start out with a human and then they can get a mythological creature when they reach so many posts?
Also, I was thinking that AT from Old Aelyn would transfer here, as a bonus to returning members. Members might be able to buy a humanoid race they'd like to see and unlock, perhaps?

|
|
Post by Hydecka on Mar 4, 2012 16:07:40 GMT -6
That might work. Would these 'Gifted' humans actually know what they are sensing, or would it be more of just a feeling? And the AT idea is pretty good, having a currency, along with something people would actually want to buy with it is a good incentive. Dont think they should just completely unlocks said race though, might just have to pay a set price per character of that race, cause we'd probably run out of races pretty quick if everyone just unlocked it for everyone else.

|
|
Post by Sway on Mar 5, 2012 9:51:43 GMT -6
Perhaps. As for the 'Gifted' humans, it could be a mix between them? Some know, others just get feelings, depending on how potent the potential "Gene" is in their blood perhaps? Depending on the price we put on unlocking races, it could unlock things for everyone, but if members want to play something in that race, they have to put forth a fraction of the original price? Or we could have members donate money to a specific race (Have the prices be pretty steep) and once that's reached, members may start using that race with an additional fraction of a fee (Or just for free). There's ways we can work with this to make it unique, fun and to promote participation. Perhaps each race could be something like $10,000 or so that members can donate to? It wouldn't unlock them all super quick, but it is still a reachable goal as a whole? Not to mention, there are TONS of Humanoid races out there that aren't even listed. Those are just the ones I could think about off the top of my head. So, I really want to get started with this, so my question is, what can we do to start building this forum as well as continue to talk about the details of it?

The best thing to do is to focus on either the setting and/or the back story at least roughly set out. once we get these things more established we can set up locations for role playing and whatnot like we had in the old Aleyn. Getting tabs at least preset up for things like the store and at least a few to be names roleplay spots would make it easier for when the places and whatnot get figured out.

Mmkay. I'll set up the OOC boards tomorrow. I'll also make a post tomorrow about what I have in mind for the plot/story/etc.

Post by Sway on Mar 6, 2012 9:18:31 GMT -6
Ok, so I have a little bit of time at the moment. I set up some of the OOC boards (Maybe almost all of them) and now its time to see what we have in mind for the plot/story/etc.
However, the only thing is, do we want it centralized around the school for these creatures with various parts of the human world available or would we rather have it based around the human world and have the school as a small part? If you ask me, what would be most successful is having the main focus be the school.
I'll post more ideas when I get a little bit of input on this theory/idea/etc.

Centralizing it around the school is probably the best bet to start with. Gives us plenty of excuse to interact with one another, the question is how do we divide the school up? not only the different areas of the school, but the students as well. Are they just one mass separated by the individual grades or are we going to separate them somehow, such as the houses in Hogwarts? That way provides us with threads for the common areas and whatnot, instead of just being generic spots of it. We've many things to figure out, but we've also all the time in the world to do so.

I don't know, both sound interesting. Which do you think would draw in more people/be more beneficial? If we did just classes, that wouldn't offer a common area or anything for people to practically be forced to interact with, but if we did something like the houses in Hogwarts (Obviously something different) it would give more to RP with and force the different species to interact (If we had them mixed between "houses"). There are lots of options and I'm excited to get things going.
So, another question, I can start working on a skin if we would like just to give me something to do while we deliberate things. Any ideas/suggestions/etc for colors, themes, styles, etc? Feel free to post links to other forums here if needed or mention some that you're particularly fond of... I mean, if we want a different style/layout (not color theme, just the way things sit) than what is on Aelyn Reborn.

I think having it being focused on the school is the best way to start. Perhaps the way we can start is having a person (supposedly human) go through some crazy experiences where he/she discovers that they are a vampire...or witch or something like that? After being disowned they somehow find their way into this realm where this school exists?

|
|
Post by Sway on Mar 6, 2012 19:46:24 GMT -6
Could do that, or we could jump right into the school aspect and have a plot relating or even revolving around the school somehow?
|
|
|
Post by Celestic on Mar 6, 2012 20:06:52 GMT -6
We could do that too. I just thought that'd be a good way to segway into the school, giving it more suspense. But I have to remind myself that this isn't exactly a story.

Yeah. If it were a story, then that would be a brilliant idea, but considering with RPs, you generally start in the middle of something, I figured it would be better to just jump right in.
So suggestions on themes/layouts/colors/etc?
Also, any ideas on what we should do for specific races to allow at first? I think that to unlock a new race, making it a joint effort to make $10,000 or something, would be a good idea, but it depends if we think that's too steep or not.

Other then requesting a dark skin because this white is blinding the crap outta me, lol, i do think that having a variety of background skins to choose from is always a good idea. Keep in mind that just because you can add all kinds of effects and can code in all kinds of stuff, doesn't mean you should. Sometimes keeping things simpler makes then better, if not easier. I, for example, come back to Aleyn after not even thinking about the site for a little while and i had pretty much no idea where anything was. i didn't even know how to open my mailbox at first, till my mouse just kinda found it. i think we should focus more on the ease of access to the various areas of the forum. Heck, i just now found where the chat box was hiding x.x''. speaking of which we will obviously need that back, it was very helpful for everyone, especially new members. I know its probably hard to balance ease of access with clutter. Im writing in like every different section of this at once xD.
i personally think having the houses would be the best idea for the aforementioned reasons, but we most likley shouldnt keep the species in seperate houses just because of what they are. we could also throw in competitions between the houses to keep at least some interaction between them as well as classrooms and the other common areas the entire school shares.
We also have to decide what this school's goal overall actually is. What are we teaching, and why? the history and origin of the school, along with these things are very important. once we figure these things out, it will be easier to decide where along the path between when it was established and whenever point forward from there we start the actual role playing.
I believe we should start with, of course, humans, but also at least a couple other races. It all depends on how the other races and specices are treated. What is and what isn't accepted at the school, and if it isn't why and what do they do about them? Witches are a pretty basic example of this because they've been on both sides of the spectrum of good and evil. It would make sense for at least a handful of the humans that are gifted with the ability to sense the supernatural might have at least some latent magical ability. Not as much, or as promintent, as say witches would be, but then how do you determine the difference.
We'll have to outline what this universes specific definition of each race that we either have, or might get, so as to not confuse people.
Im going to stop writing now before i ramble on for another hour or so. pretty sure enough topics has been thrown out for now.
*oh and one more thing, you have to be careful with how things clash with the background, the reason i couldn't find the chat box is because i'm in the night skin on Aleyn, which has some white right about where some of the side menu bars are, so i could barely see them at all.
